Silver DofE expedition on the South Downs rewards students with sense of accomplishment and beautiful views

Laura W, Year 11

Our qualifying silver DofE expedition on the South Downs at the start of the summer holidays began at a very windy Beachy Head, near Eastbourne.

Soon after meeting up with our instructors, we were off! We enjoyed lots of lovely views and the weather brightened up, meaning we ate our lunch in sunshine. By the time we reached our first camp at Alfriston, the wind had eased, making it a bit easier put up our tents. We played cards and ate some delicious pesto pasta.

We were up early on the second day to make breakfast and pack our tents. It started to rain and continued to pour down for most of the day. We got pretty soaked, which wasn’t much fun, but we were very grateful for our waterproofs. Luckily, by the time we arrived at our campsite at Telscombe the rain had stopped and the views out to sea were beautiful. Once again, we played cards and ate delicious pesto pasta - we like pesto pasta!

On the third and final day we were up even earlier to pack up our tents and clean our cooking stoves. By the time we reached our final destination near Ditchling Beacon there were a few sore feet, but we all felt a real sense of accomplishment and pride. It was time to make our way to the ice cream van for a well deserved reward!

Thank you to Mrs Lane and Mrs Barnes for all their support over the three days.
