20 March 2024
With a programme that began with Edwin Hatch’s beautiful hymn Breathe on me, Breath of God, sung by our Amaris choir, and concluded with a medley from Hairspray, performed by massed choirs, soloists, and a live band (main photo), our Spring Concert on Tuesday 19 March was a wonderful celebration of many genres and styles of music.
The audience enjoyed lovely lyrical pieces from Flutissimo and from Pro Corda Festival finalists, the Zheng Quartet, who played Floating Down River, and rhythm aplenty from our superb Percussion Ensemble, Senior Choir’s Mamma Mia! medley and a performance of Money, Money, Money from our Sinfonietta (a well-deserved new name for the Training Orchestra). The Junior Choir’s rendition of Jessie J’s Flashlight was an audience pleaser, performed as it was with enthusiasm and skill by some of our youngest musicians. The Symphony Orchestra took us to the movies and across the Atlantic, performing the La La Land Suite, while Titanic, a magnificent composition from A Level music student Sephora, put us first on and then under the same ocean as we listened to her digitally recorded piece inspired by the fate of RMS Titanic – all while watching on screen the Logic software she used to create it. There was an additional treat at the start of the evening, with Ms Rachel Ives, Interim Director of Music, introducing a special performance by the Lee Trio, Lilico, Cherry and Isabel, winners of the U19 prize in this year’s prestigious National Pro Corda Festival. The evening concluded with fond farewells to Teacher of Music Mrs Young, and Upper Sixth musicians taking part in their final Woldingham Concert. Special thanks were given to Music Ribbon Isabel and Academic Ribbon Cherry, who Ms Ives praised for their incredible contribution to music at Woldingham over the past four years.
Thank you to everyone involved in bringing such a lovely musical conclusion to the term.
