Ms Rita Farrell, Teacher of Mathematics
On Saturday 20 April, keen mathematicians Tisha, Peach and Paula, Year 9, enjoyed taking part in the first of a series of Ri Mathematics Masterclasses, organised by The Royal Institution, which are led by experts from industry, academia, and education. The sessions involve in-depth investigations of topics in mathematics, combining theory with interactive exploration, with speakers offering students insights into potential careers for mathematicians.
The topic of the first masterclass, led by a maths lecturer from UCL, was topology – the maths of shapes and holes. Our students, and their peers from five other schools, had great fun exploring every possible shape known to man. Tisha, Peach and Paula were wonderful ambassadors for Woldingham, showing intellectual curiosity throughout and often first to offer an explanation or theory on a new concept.
In future sessions they will explore the language of mathematics, the Josephus problem, and mathematical stories. The Ri Masterclasses are always a wonderful experience for our enthusiastic mathematicians, nurturing curiosity and inspiring life-long engagement with maths. Tisha, Peach, and Paula really enjoyed the day and said how grateful they are for this opportunity to learn and explore these interesting topics.
