Mr Paul Rickard, Head of Science
On the evening of Wednesday 8 May, Laura K from Year 10 showcased her exceptional science communication skills to take a well-deserved second place in the junior category at Tonbridge School's ‘Science Snippets’ competition.
This event, renowned for its emphasis on making science accessible and engaging, invites students to deliver a concise and captivating four-minute presentation on a scientific topic of their choice. The challenge? To make complex science understandable and interesting to an audience of 13-year-olds.
In a world where effective science communication is increasingly crucial, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, this competition underscored the importance of simplifying and clarifying scientific concepts for a broader audience. The evening was a testament to the diverse and fascinating realms of science, with presentations ranging from 'A Whistle-stop Tour of AI in Medicine' and 'The Chemistry of Self-heating Noodles', to 'Molecular Knots' and 'The Secrets of Salix Alba'.
Laura’s presentation, titled 'Angiogenesis: The Double-edged Sword in Biology,' captivated the audience by exploring the formation of new blood vessels, a process that plays a crucial role in both health and disease. Her articulate and engaging explanations not only impressed the judges enough to award her second place but also won her a £75 book token.
This achievement highlights not only Laura's talent but also the importance of fostering clear and effective science communication skills in our students. We are incredibly proud of Laura’s accomplishment and look forward to seeing more students take on the challenge of making science accessible and exciting for all.
