Play Your Way to Wimbledon – Mr Mark Love and Mr Patrick Gorman, Heads of Tennis
On Wednesday 22 May, Woldingham tennis players braved the rain to take part in the school’s first ever Play Your Way to Wimbledon competition, a U14 event where the winners of each school and club tournament compete in a regional stage, the winners of which get the incredible opportunity to play in the competition final at Wimbledon.
Twelve students from Years 7, 8 and 9 played in four round robin ‘boxes’, with the winners of each box progressing to the semi-finals, where Kitty, Year 9, took on Leila, Year 7, and Charlotte played against fellow Year 8, Delphie.
The upshot was an amazing final with the smallest of margins separating Charlotte and Leila (pictured), both tennis squad players for their respective years. Leila took the victory, winning 4-3 in the final set on a sudden death point, so the match really could not have been closer.
We wish Leila as winner (and possibly Charlotte, who may get through as a runner up) the best of luck in the next stage of the competition, which takes place on the weekend of 22-23 June.

Junior and Inter Girls District Athletics Championships
On Thursday 16 May, our junior and inter athletics teams competed against 15 other schools in the annual District Championships at the K2 track in Crawley. Despite rain putting paid to part of the competition, there were some great performances from Woldingham athletes in both track and field events, including:
Junior girls
Amaya S, Year 8 - 2nd in the High Jump and 4th in the 300m
Theodora P, Year 9 - 4th in the Javelin
Nicole E, Year 9 - 4th in the 75m Hurdles
Inter girls
Saskia G, Year 10 - 4th in the 300m
Eliska S, Year 10, Captain of the Inter team said: “Unfortunately, torrential rain at midday led to the cancellation of the Inter girls high jump and shot put, much to everyone’s disappointment. Woldingham’s team spirit came through as we supported each other in our events, even through the unexpected weather. It was a very exciting day. Well done to everyone who competed!”
