Lower Sixth artists acquire casting skills at expert-led workshop

On Tuesday 18 June, Lower Sixth textiles and fine art students enjoyed a fascinating casting workshop, led by London-based artist Rebecca Griffiths, where we experimented with various techniques.

We began by casting different body parts such as our own fingers, noses, and lips, as well as objects like shells, using alginate. Next, Rebecca demonstrated how we can create our own moulds by pressing objects into a clay slab, creating imprints into which plaster is poured. We also constructed our own plaster pieces, using foam board to form a square box that we filled with clay elements. Once the plaster was poured in and hardened, the clay was removed, leaving negative imprints in the plaster block.

This workshop was a great experience. We are eager to incorporate these newly acquired techniques into our upcoming projects.
