On Friday June 28, Lower Sixth STEM Society members were thrilled to participate in a workshop led by Erin Williams, an aerodynamicist and engineer from McLaren Racing F1. Erin gave us valuable and fascinating insights into her role, as well as the aerodynamics of F1 cars, covering topics including DRS (drag reduction system), flow-vis paint (which allows aerodynamicists to better visualise the airflow around cars), and wind tunnels.

Erin, who studied motorsport engineering at Sheffield University, talked about her route to becoming an engineer and aerodynamicist at one of the top teams in F1, as well as highlighting the roles of other inspirational women in the field, such as Susie Wolff and Bianca Bustamante.

To top off a great session, Erin brought along various car parts, including a section of the rear wing, as well as racing suits, helmets, and shoes. Our already high scientific ambitions were further fuelled by Erin.
