At the end of September, Woldingham’s Art and German Departments joined forces for a visit to the Expressionists: Kandinsky, Münter and The Blue Rider exhibition at Tate Modern for Sixth Form students. For students of German, the visit was an invaluable chance to explore German Expressionism, a topic covered in the A Level curriculum, as well the opportunity to acquire useful content for their oral exam. Art students benefited from close study of works by pioneering artists, gaining inspiration and insights for their A Level coursework and creative projects. Naima-Grace, who studies both subjects at A Level, thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition.

Mr Ceska, Miss Lancaster, my fellow students and I took the train from school to London Blackfriars, from where it’s just a short walk to Tate Modern. The exhibition comprised the work of Der Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider), a group of German artists, including Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky and Gabrielle Münter, who were interested in spirituality, which they expressed through symbolic colours, shapes and animals. The artwork on show ranged from huge paintings of blue cows to small sketchbook pages for an ice skating rink in Russia. The exhibition was excellent. Mr Ceska made the train ride back very informative and interesting by getting us to look up information about the artists and present two truths and a lie as facts, for everyone to guess which we’d made up.
