Art and textiles students discover new techniques through workshops and project work

It’s been an exciting and productive first half of term in the Art Department, with students involved in workshops, life drawing, landscape and portrait painting projects, as well as a trip with peers studying A Level German to an exhibition at Tate Modern, which you can read about here.

We began the term with Upper Sixth Fine Art and Textiles students taking part in a heat-press workshop, where they learned new print-making techniques and experimented with custom ink backgrounds, creating unique compositions and using their newly acquired skills to evolve their projects.

Year 9 students have embarked on their landscape projects, using concertina sketchbooks to experiment with vibrant and playful compositions. They discovered the use of bleach in combination with ink, as well as working into the pages with fine liner, crafting dynamic pieces.

Miss Eilise Lancaster, our Artist in Residence, has been working closely with scholars throughout the term, leading sessions on figure and portrait painting in gouache, a water-based paint that’s opaque and dries to a matte finish. These workshops have helped students develop their skills of observation and use of colour and space, which will be invaluable for future personal projects.

We’ve held life drawing sessions every Thursday, where Sixth Form students have explored new methods of depicting human form, using graphite, charcoal, ink and other media on a variety of colourful backgrounds.

We’re already looking forward to seeing students utilise these innovative and creative ways of working in the second half of term.
