Magical production of The Wiz enchants audiences

4 December 2024

This year's bewitching Sixth Form production brought us the tale of Dorothy’s adventures in the Land of Oz in the enormously fun rock, gospel and soul musical The Wiz.

As Dorothy and Toto ‘eased on down the road’ in Oz, picking up a wonderfully wobbly Scarecrow, remarkably rusty Tin Man and the most scaredy cat Cowardly Lion along the way, their adventures involved delightful witches, hilarious witches, evil witches, colourful munchkins, cunning crows, officious mice, fearful flying monkeys – and of course an ‘all-powerful wizard’, who wasn’t all she seemed. All these characters – and more – were brought to the stage brilliantly by around 40 Sixth Formers, many playing multiple parts in each show, and some, including Dorothy, Toto and the Tin Man, different roles across the two fabulous performances.

The performers were accompanied by a superb live band, comprising students and professional musicians, as well as the fantastic Soul Sister Choir of Year 9 singers. As always, the technical crew pulled out all the stops with spectacular costumes, make up, special effects, sound and lighting.

It’s amazing to think that alongside all the preparation and rehearsals that created this memorable production – led by Director/Choreographer Miss Stacey Williams and Musical Director Mr Richard Hammond-Hall – were lessons, sports fixtures, university applications and much more. Bravo to everyone involved!
