5 December 2024
That our Music Department and around 150 musicians brought us a wonderful Winter Concert on Monday 2 December is testament to hard work, dedication and stamina, as well as skill, coming as it did hot on the heels of the musical theatre magic of The Wiz, and just a week before Woldingham’s Carol Service at Westminster Cathedral.
There was a festive start to the concert as our Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Miss Wang, opened with a Christmas at the Movies medley, before Sinfonietta, conducted by Mr Hammond-Hall, performed Tchaikovsky’s Trepak, from The Nutcracker. Our Percussion Ensemble, led by Mr McCutcheon, made easy - and entertaining - work of the Mission Impossible theme, while Flutissimo, led by Mrs Sparks, took us back in time with Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine, Op. 11, composed in the 1860s. Our choirs brought a range of pieces to the concert, with Best Day of My Life (Junior Choir), Cradle Hymn (Amaris), Irish Blessing (Senior Choir), and Ocean Eyes (Caritas) before all our singers took to the stage for a rousing finale of the aptly named Why We Sing.
