Mrs Suzy Woolaway, Deputy Head Co-curricular and Operations
The Woldingham Ski Team put on an outstanding performance at the annual British Schoolgirls’ Races in Flaine, France at the end of January. Braving ice, gusting winds, and rain, our six-strong team — Oksana, Grace, Megan, Alice, Lily, and Isla — took on the challenge of both the slalom and giant slalom courses with determination and skill.
The weekend began with a training session led by François Simond, a former French Olympic skier (see video clip), setting the stage for an exciting competition. Our A Team made a strong start in the team slalom event, securing a convincing first round victory against City of London School for Girls. However, a tough draw against Reed's in Round 2 resulted in a narrow defeat. Unfortunately, due to weather conditions, the B Team races had to be cancelled.
Despite challenging and heavily rutted terrain, all our skiers delivered clean runs in the giant slalom. The A Team’s impressive performance earned them a bronze medal in the non-registered team event, while Megan also secured an individual bronze in the U16 non-registered competition.
A special mention goes to Oksana, whose exceptional skiing propelled her beyond the non-registered category and into the top tier of registered racers. She finished an incredible 26th out of 159 skiers, narrowly missing out on a medal but achieving a remarkable feat.
A huge thank you to Miss Daley for organising such a fantastic weekend, and congratulations to all our skiers for their resilience, sportsmanship, and outstanding achievements on the slopes.
