Students endeavour to replicate Rubens’ technique in portraiture workshop

31 January 2025

In January, Miss Lancaster, Woldingham’s artist in residence, ran a workshop to help Year 10 art students develop their portraiture skills.

Our artists learnt about the anatomical structure of the face, and how facial features are made up of different planes. They explored the history of drawing with the technique 'trois crayons', where red, black and white chalks are used, putting this into practice by copying Paul Rubens’ portrait of a young girl. This developed students’ knowledge of how to apply tone effectively to a create form in a portrait, and how to add colour to create a sense of depth and warmth.

Referencing Rubens’ technique, the students began a drawing of Miss Pliaukstaite, who was Woldingham’s art technician last year.

The workshop concluded with Miss Lancaster demonstrating the technique by drawing a student who had volunteered to pose as her model (see photo below).
