Woldingham sport hits the ground running in 2025

14 February 2025

A busy sporting start to the year has seen netballers winning cups and plates, cricketers playing at Lord’s, an enjoyable hockey and netball tour to Ascot for Year 8s, and Daisy in Year 9 earn the opportunity to represent Surrey at cross country.

Cross Country – Miss Fiona Beaumont, Interim Director of Sport

Woldingham is celebrating a fantastic achievement by Daisy L in Year 9, who secured a top six finish at the South Surrey Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships, competing against 93 athletes in her age category.

This exceptional performance earned Daisy a coveted spot on the Surrey Schools team and she will represent Surrey at the prestigious English Schools Cross Country Championships on 15 March, competing against the country’s best young runners. This is a remarkable accomplishment and testament to Daisy’s hard work, dedication, and resilience. We are incredibly proud of Daisy’s success and wish her the very best as she prepares for the next stage of this exciting journey. Congratulations, Daisy!

Year 8 Netball and Hockey Tour – Emily H, Year 8

I had the best time I could ever imagine on our netball and hockey tour to Ascot, having fun with friends and spending time with people I don’t often get the chance to. As well as playing great sports matches against other schools over the weekend, which were really close and exciting, we also enjoyed bowling, and playing games in the hotel together. I also loved going out for dinner with friends. The teachers made the trip so amazing that I did not want to leave.

Netball - Miss Lauren Hindley, Head of Netball

We’ve enjoyed another fantastic half term of netball, with every year group proudly representing the school in both district and Surrey Schools tournaments.

The U14A team secured the district cup, while the U14B team triumphed in the plate competition. The U15s also had a brilliant run at the district tournament, with the U15A team winning the cup and the U15B team claiming the plate. Impressively, all four teams went through their respective tournaments undefeated, highlighting their strength and consistency on court.

Our U13A squad competed fiercely at Surrey Schools and we eagerly await news on their progression to the next round. Meanwhile, our 1st team continues its impressive run, advancing to the semi-finals of the Sisters in Sport Trophy.

Well done to all players for their dedication and outstanding performances.

Hockey – Mr Josh Birtles, Head of Hockey

It has been an enjoyable start to the new year for Woldingham hockey, with 16 fixtures across various age groups and competitions.

Congratulations to our Year 8 teams, who triumphed in both games against St Mary's School on last weekend’s successful tour to Ascot. Our U12 teams showcased great determination in a recent tournament, with the A team securing 4th place and the B team achieving 3rd place. The senior squad faced Kingston Grammar School in a closely contested match, narrowly missing victory.

As the season progresses, Woldingham Hockey continues to demonstrate resilience and sportsmanship, building on these experiences for future successes.

Cricket – Mr Darryl Rebbetts, Head of Cricket

Our cricket teams continue to impress, both indoors and out.

Our U15s secured a spot in the prestigious Surrey Finals Day, where they showcased their talent and determination throughout the competition. The U17s and U13s recently enjoyed the fantastic experience of playing in indoor tournaments at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, a valuable opportunity for development and growth. The U15s will soon follow in their footsteps, with their indoor tournament scheduled for just after the half-term break.

Our weekly winter cricket programme is thriving, with girls demonstrating remarkable commitment by attending training sessions before school throughout the winter months. Their dedication is setting the foundation for a successful summer season.

Adding to the excitement, we are preparing for our very first Cricket & Swimming Tour in October 2025. This unique opportunity will involve 21 students and promises to be an unforgettable experience for all involved.

Swimming - Mrs Tina Cornelius, Head of Swimming

Three Year 9 swimmers – Odette, Tarryn and Thea – took part in the Surrey Schools Individual Championships. Competing in the intermediate age group against swimmers from Year 10 as well as fellow Year 9s, all three girls achieved personal best times, demonstrating their hard work and dedication.

Last week, our swimmers delivered outstanding results in the final round of the districts. Competing against seven other schools, our teams achieved the following excellent placings:

  • Lower Junior Girls - 4th
  • Junior Girls – 1st
  • Intermediate Girls – 1st
  • Senior Girls – 2nd

Football – Miss Karleen Daley, Teacher of PE

Our U14 football team put on a valiant display in their recent Sisters in Sport fixture, narrowly missing out on victory in a closely contested match. Despite the result not going our way, the team demonstrated exceptional progress, resilience, and teamwork, proving just how far they have come this season. The girls should be incredibly proud of their performance. With every game, they are growing in confidence and cohesion. The squad’s commitment to training and their ability to adapt under pressure highlight the bright future ahead for this talented group of players.
