Ms Amanda Owens, Librarian
A visit from Sophie McKenzie, the highly successful author of Young Adult books, was the perfect way for Woldingham to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 6 March.
Author of numerous titles, including the Girl, Missing and The Medusa Project series, Blood Ties and Hide and Secrets, Sophie talked about her career to students in Years 7, 8 and 9, as well as guests from Oasis Academy, Coulsdon, Oxted School and de Stafford School. She also explained her writing process and how she gains inspiration for her novels, before doing a reading from her latest book, Storm of Lies. A panel of students, which included Darcey in Year 7, Daisy, Year 8 and Nithali, Year 9, then asked Sophie a range of questions, such as who her favourite female characters in literature are and whether they have influenced her writing, and what advice she would give to young aspiring writers.
Copies of Sophie’s books were available to purchase during the lunch break when students had the opportunity to meet Sophie in the library and get them signed.
We were fortunate that such a well-known writer could take the time out from her busy writing schedule to visit Woldingham and inspire our students. It was a truly memorable World Book Day!
