Last Friday, the whole of Year 9 arrived at school very early for the annual trip to the WWI battlefields around Ypres. The day included visits to several cemeteries, including Tyne Cot, the largest British military cemetery in the world, with more than 11,900 soldiers buried there, as well as the names of 33,783 servicemen whose bodies were never identified. We also visited Essex Farm Cemetery where John McCrae, the Canadian solider who wrote the famous poem ‘In Flanders Field’, was treated; he later died in the medical centre based in the area. We finished the day at the Menin Gate where, as a group, we reflected on what we had seen and the sacrifice that the young men made fighting in WWI.
