Year 8 students, Amelie, Rosie, Ella, Imogen, Milly and Sophie, were selected to represent Woldingham at a sports leadership day, run by Surrey Active. They spent the morning with young leaders from four other schools, looking at the principles of organising a competition before, in two groups per school, coming up with an original game of their own. Their ideas were then put to the test as over 90 primary school children had been invited along to try them out in the afternoon. One of the games invented by our girls was based on football, but played with hands rather than feet; the second involved a tennis ball, a tennis racket – and a bean bag! Both went down very well.
All our girls proved themselves to be confident and charismatic leaders and were not phased at all by the challenge. They will continue to develop their leadership skills, firstly by each selecting another girl in their year with whom they will share what they have learned, after which the 12 girls will run a session for the whole of Year 8 in the last week of term.
It was a great day and valuable experience for everyone. Many thanks to our gap student, Miss Michael, for her assistance on the day.
