A packed audience of students interested in law enjoyed a fascinating evening with a panel of lawyers from a wide array of practice areas within the legal profession at our Careers in Law event this week. All of our six guest speakers - lawyers in private practice, in-house counsel, a barrister and tribunal judge, experts in Intellectual property, financial services, property, insurance and immigration law - are parents of Woldingham students and entertained us all with stories and anecdotes from their career journey.
It was interesting to hear their views on the pros and cons of studying Law at university, a question students grapple with. The panellists’ views were mixed, perhaps not surprising given the equal split between those who had studied for a law degree versus those who had studied other subjects. Also fascinating were the messages about the surprising twists and turns in their careers, difficult decisions and challenging circumstances. One of our panellists spoke of the challenges of working in the sensitive area of immigration and asylum, another told an amusing story of finding himself alone in a very small room with a murderer he was going to defend.
Above all, it was clear that all of our panellists were glad they had chosen law because of the breadth and flexibility of opportunities it has given them. We are extremely grateful to them for giving up their evening to take part in what was an inspiring and informative evening for our students.
