Marvellous Maths Results in UKMT Challenges

5 March 2019

In February, Mathematics students participated in two competitions run by the UK Mathematical Trust.

Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 achieved incredible results in the UKMT Intermediate Individual Challenge: many girls received Gold Certificates, awarded to only the top 6% of participants in this nationwide competition; nine students reached the ‘Kangaroo’ round, for which only 3% qualify, and one student, Anna, reached the Olympiad round, for which only 500 students in the UK qualify. Anna’s achievement is all the more impressive because she is in Year 9 and was competing against many students two years older than her. All the students were delighted with their achievements and special congratulations must also go to our ‘Kangaroo’ qualifiers: Joanna, Eno, Stephanie, Luna, Gemma, Imogen, Jing Qiao, Xinran and Agnes.

Towards the end of February, a talented team of students from Years 8 and 9 travelled to Tonbridge Grammar School to participate in the UKMT Junior Team Challenge. Among the many challenging problem-solving activities they undertook was a mathematical relay. Our team was so competitive that a collision occurred with one of the other teachers, who unfortunately got in the way… thankfully everyone escaped unharmed! 25 teams from schools all over the South East took part and Woldingham finished a highly creditable 5th in a very competitive field. The students were delighted to have come away with such a fantastic result. Huge congratulations to Eno, Stephanie, Cindy and Praow.
