Government statistics show that women make up less than one quarter of the UK’s STEM workforce, so it was wonderful to welcome guests to our Careers in STEM evening, helping students find out more about where their interests in Science, Technology and Maths could take them.
Our guests came from careers across the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths spectrum, from a veterinary science research scientist to a wind farms specialist from one of Europe’s leading renewable energy companies. A packed audience of students from Year 9 to Upper Sixth enjoyed fascinating talks from our panel about their career journeys so far and an engaging Q&A session in which our students asked some very interesting questions.
One of the key messages from the evening was just how transferable the skills learned through studying Science subjects are, and our guests were living proof of this. Our panellists stressed that students should feel confident to follow their own interests in the knowledge that they can apply their skills broadly across a diverse range of career options.
We are extremely grateful to our panellists for giving up their evening to take part in what was an inspiring and informative evening for our students.
