Junior Production: The Black Knot

Junior Production: The Black Knot

8 May 2019

Last Friday, a cast of 39 Year 8 and Year 9 students took to the stage in what can only be described as a spellbinding adaptation of the ancient Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. Since January, a full ensemble cast had been rehearsing tirelessly to bring something different to the Woldingham stage and they did not disappoint. The Black Knot, written and directed by our Director of Drama, Stacey Williams, and with assistant direction from Sixth Formers Katie, Evie and Grace, was excellently performed by all involved.

The adaptation cleverly linked the Greek mythical narrative to modern day themes, whilst still retaining Greek theatrical conventions, and the cast took the audience on an adventure filled with mystery, magic, tragedy and comedy.  All the performers rose to the challenge of a total theatre experience – providing the audience with moments that were designed to wow and amaze. From high drama in the Labyrinth to an explosive storm scene with stunning choreography at the end of Act One, the cast’s energy was boundless.

To support the acting, the performance enjoyed a creative cinematic soundscape, imaginative lighting design and an array of well-crafted set, props and costumes. This complex piece of theatre, for such a young cast of performers, provided all involved with an opportunity to prove their dramatic diversity, potential and professionalism. It was evident from the performance that both cast and crew thoroughly enjoyed performing The Black Knot and were sad to see it come to an end.

Congratulations to all involved; we are excited to see what theatrical treats you have in store for the future!
