Two recent talks demonstrated perfectly the variety offered by Woldingham’s Thinking Big talks programme, designed to stimulate minds and provoke discussion. Upper Sixth Former Theodora explored the question Why is drama important in modern society? on Friday 19 November and the following Friday, Head of Computer Science Mr Rattle asked – and answered – What can algorithms teach us about Love Island?
A Level drama student Theodora’s enthusiasm for her subject was clear as she talked about positive changes – among many negative ones – arising from COVID-19’s impact on drama and theatre, such as the ability to reach a broader audience using technology, and looked at the role drama can play in mental health therapy and business training.
Mr Rattle’s appreciation of algorithms was perhaps less surprising than his impressive knowledge of Love Island. The combination of the two proved entertaining and informative and brought a new perspective to – for many – a familiar subject.
Both talks made for a diverting and educational 20 minutes on a Friday lunchtime.
