Royal Festival Hall production of A Level set work inspires music students

Ms Rachel Ives, Assistant Director of Music

On Tuesday 27 September, I took our Sixth Form music students to London’s Royal Festival Hall to see the Aurora Orchestra’s acclaimed orchestral theatre staging of Berlioz’s vibrant Symphonie Fantastique, one of the A Level set works.

This superb production first featured in the 2019 BBC Proms. The stage was set with masks, lighting, a fabulous narrator, pretty winter lanterns, stars that shone in the night-time section, and an enormous glittering ball for the waltz scene. Impressively, the orchestra played with no music at all – a whole 90 minutes of ensemble playing completely from memory! The whole evening was wonderful inspiration for the students and we enjoyed every note of it.
