Woldingham gives award-winning poet Phil Wilcox a thunderous reception

Australian slam poetry champion Phil Wilcox was a huge hit with students when he visited Woldingham to celebrate National Poetry Day (NPD) on Thursday 6 October.

Focusing on this year’s NPD theme, The Environment, Phil kicked off our morning whole school assembly with a rousing, interactive poem about the weather in Australia. The accompanying sound of more than 600 students and staff stamping on the floor to simulate thunder, tapping their knees for rain and clapping simultaneously for lightning when indicated to do so by Phil created an incredible experience! It certainly woke us all up and prepared students in Years 7 and 8 for a fun morning of creative writing and poetry with Phil.

The visit culminated in a wonderful lunchtime performance in the Live Lounge, where Phil told us how his unplanned poetry career came about and recited and explained the stories behind poems including The Sandpit and The Day is Done.
