Isabel L, Lower Sixth
Members of Med Soc and Junior Med Soc came together recently to learn some first aid skills from Upper Sixth Formers Aashvi and Eloise, including really useful hands-on practice of CPR (cardiopulmonary rehabilitation) using dummies. The important survey you should do before undertaking any first aid, Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing and Circulation – or DR ABC – is now firmly embedded in my mind. This is vital to protect both casualty and first-aider.
Eloise talked to Med Soc members about her work as a member of St John’s Ambulance, including some very challenging situations she has faced. This helped us understand the tough side of being a frontline healthcare professional, which is not often discussed. We also looked at topical ethical issues in healthcare, such as do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders, discussing what they are and what constitutes an official DNR.
In our most recent session, Miss Gallagher gave us an overview of medical school interviews, introducing us to the two different formats of interviews, MMI (Multiple Mini Interview) and panel interviews, and we discussed potential interview questions such as ‘Do you need to be empathetic to be a doctor?’
