28 June 2023
Our musical end of term celebration, aptly titled Anything Goes, saw a song by Bruno Mars follow a sonata by Brahms, students’ own compositions performed alongside the works of Chopin and Lennon & McCartney, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee on the same programme as Sting’s Fields of Gold. And what a treat it all was.
After a welcome return for our Training Orchestra, playing Sway, the programme concluded with a wonderful performance of movements from Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals from our Symphony Orchestra. It was mesmerising to watch pianists Cherry and Isabel, Lower Sixth, as their hands flew across the keyboards.
The evening’s proceedings weren’t quite over, however. A ‘for one night only’ band of students* and Miss Chan gave a special performance of The Beach Boys’ God Only Knows for Mr Hargreaves, our Director of Music, who will leave Woldingham at the end of term. Mr Hargreaves’ thanks concluded, fittingly, with: “Words don’t really do it, it’s the music that matters.”

*We were delighted to hear that band member Clemmie A, Year 11, has just been named Trinity Music Academy’s 2023 Musician of the Year. Congratulations, Clemmie – a fantastic achievement.
