New academic year kicks off with creativity, camaraderie and competition

13 September 2023

It was a fairy tale start to the new academic year as members of Woldingham’s four Houses – Barat, Digby, Duchesne and Stuart – created high-energy House Festival performances on the themes of Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White on Thursday 7 September.  There was a twist to the tale too, as each House also had a time period to incorporate, ranging from medieval times to the year 3000, as well as a musical genre, such as classical or rap.

Industry and inventiveness were in evidence everywhere as, under the direction of House Captains, students crafted costumes and rehearsed song, dance and drama routines across the school – a great way for new students to bond with fellow House members, as well as for friends to reunite after the holidays.

Efforts paid off handsomely as each House offered a fabulous piece of entertainment to the rest of the school in the auditorium at the end of the afternoon. There were commendations all round from the staff judging panel (Barat - best costumes, Stuart - best song, Duchesne - best dance, Digby - best story), but it was Duchesne’s turn to take the House Festival trophy. We look forward to plenty more hard-fought but friendly inter-House competitions throughout the year.
