No let up to sporting action as half term break approaches

No let up to sporting action as half term break approaches

12 October 2023

Mrs Caroline Treacy, Director of Sport

As we head into half term, the PE Department is excited to be taking 40 students from our senior hockey and netball squads to tour Singapore and Malaysia. It will be wonderful for them to experience playing sport abroad as well as to absorb something of the culture of both countries.

Our senior squads – as well as students across the school - have had a busy couple of weeks of sport in the run up to our trip.

Mr Allberry, Head of Hockey

Our 1st XI enjoyed a great match against Eastbourne College this week in the second round of the England Hockey Tier 2 competition but were narrowly beaten 1-0. The team’s sights are now set on the second round of the Independent Schools Hockey Cup after half term.

Our U13 team also made it to the second round of their national cup, only to lose out in a dramatic penalty shootout to a strong Ipswich side.

We have played several block fixtures, including against Gordon’s School, where we put out 13 sides across all age groups (see photos in gallery below).

It’s been wonderful to hear about hockey success at country and national academy trials. Congratulations to the students who have been selected for county squads and the England hockey talent academies: Daisy O, Lexie W, Ellie E, Lily O, Anna M, and Charlotte B. Other students are still awaiting news.

We are also delighted to hear that 2023 leaver Alex Sewell recently made her debut for Dartmouth College in America, where she is studying with a hockey scholarship. We hope to hear from her soon about her experience across the pond.

Mrs Cornelius, Head of Swimming

Swimming has got off to an excellent start, with some great results in the four fixtures to date. Our new Year 7 swimmers won two of their fixtures, with Amarisa B-H winning all her races.  Year 8 swimmers have been outstanding, winning all their fixtures. Both Year 7 and Year 8 are unbeaten in all relay races.  All our senior swimmers swam really well against tough competition in their first fixture this term.

Miss Hindley, Head of Netball

Our 1st VII (main photo) played outstandingly well at the recent Surrey Schools Tournament. We are awaiting qualification results to learn if the team has made the Surrey finals.

Ava S in Year 7 has been accepted into the U13 county player development netball programme, which is a huge achievement. Well done, Ava.

Each year group has represented the school in at least one netball fixture this half term. It’s been great to see so many students showing such enthusiasm for the sport, including some who have never played before.
