A great debate – in terms of both intensity and subject matter – kicked off REthink Week on Monday 6 November, organised by Woldingham’s theology and philosophy club, REthink. The motion ‘This house believes that religion and science are incompatible' inspired eloquent arguments on both sides, strong (but certainly not heated) debate and provoked plenty of questions from the audience.
Talks in REthink Week came from Upper Sixth Former Liv, who addressed a very topical question: Do sex differences matter in sport? and guest speaker Sr Dr Gemma Simmons CJ, who gave a fascinating talk titled What did the Church ever do for us? Christianity and Public Life. Students were also given a platform to talk about anything they felt needs ‘re-thinking’ at Woldingham’s very own Speakers’ Corner on Wednesday lunchtime.
In an after-school art workshop on Wednesday, students used the gelli printing technique to create colourful prints of magazine images that represent aspects of REthink, with the ultimate aim of designing a tote bag to promote the club.
The final activity in REthink Week is a treasure hunt for Mardeners at lunchtime on Friday 10 November, where participants answer a series of moral dilemmas to guide them on their quest. A fitting conclusion to a particularly thought-provoking week.
