5 December 2023
Things took a festive turn on the very first day of December as an enthusiastic auditorium audience enjoyed Christmas songs composed and performed by two Year 9 bands and a rendition of 'Do you want to build a snowman' by our training orchestra.
The short concert in the final period of the week gave musicians in Years 7 to 9 the opportunity to perform on the ‘big stage’ – some of them for the first time – to a very warm and supportive audience of Mardeners and members of staff.
Our training orchestra, comprising musicians in Years 7 to 9 currently at grades 1-3 on their instrument, also played ‘Can’t take my eyes off you’ to much seated swaying from their peers. This was followed by some very entertaining ‘mash ups’ from three Year 7 and three Year 8 bands – Year 7 bands playing and singing using three chords only and Year 8 bands, four.
The two excellent original compositions from the Year 9 bands shared a Christmassy sentiment and sound, while being quite different from one another.
To finish, Junior Choir took to the stage to perform 'Somewhere in my memory', by John Williams, a lovely piece they also sang beautifully a few days later at our Carol Service in Westminster Cathedral.
At the conclusion of the concert, compere Miss Wang congratulated all the performers and thanked the audience for being so supportive. It was a fun end to the week and a fitting start to December.
