Busy term for Woldingham’s hockey players, netballers and cricketers, while ski team looks forward to competing in January

12 December 2023

The autumn sporting term included two good cup runs for our 1st XI (pictured), more cricket than might be expected for the time of year (thanks to our indoor facilities) and the selection of Woldingham's ski team for British Schoolgirls’ Races in France at the end of January.

Mr Ben Allberry, Head of Hockey

This has been a great term for our hockey teams. The first XI had two excellent cup runs, with a very close loss to Tier 1 Bede’s School in the most recent game. Anna M, Lower Sixth, was the star of the game in goal. The 2nd XI played some very good hockey against two extremely strong 1st XIs in the regional Tier 3 competition, with Onome, Lower Sixth, having two fantastic games. Our U13 team is still on its Plate run, with a competitive match against Seaford College coming up in the New Year.

Our Year 7 hockey players have enjoyed representing the school in their first term, playing some excellent hockey, winning several matches and finishing sixth in the recent county competition. Year 9 competed well in a tough county Tier 2 competition, creating lots of chances and showing how much the players have progressed this year. The Year 10 team is continuing to develop its patterns of play and gained a good win against St Teresa’s, along with a couple of narrow losses.

Congratulations to all those in the England hockey pathway and good luck to those still waiting to hear.

Mr Darryl Rebbetts, Head of Cricket

Cricket has started brilliantly this term, with opportunities for all students to take part in our Winter Cricket Programme on Thursdays before school and Tuesday lunchtimes for hard ball nets.

In addition to our weekly practice sessions, Woldingham participated in two indoor tournaments. One inter-squad tournament (see photos in gallery below) saw 24 students take part in a triangular tournament to prepare for the Lady Taverners Competition next term. Our U13 cricketers saw off three other schools in the district stage, winning all their matches and qualifying for the county stage in January. Our U15 squad is also looking forward to the district round in January.

All this is excellent preparation for students as we phase in hard ball cricket into summer 2024 with three hard ball teams (U13, U15 and U18) and our first cricket tour (Cheltenham for the Year 9 and 10 hard ball team). Meantime, there is regular soft ball cricket for all. It’s an exciting time for cricket at Woldingham.

Miss Lauren Hindley, Head of Netball

The autumn term got off to a flying start with Surrey Schools tournaments, district tournaments, cup matches, plate matches and league matches. Our students’ positive attitude has been incredible, both players and supporters. In October, we were extremely lucky to have England Netballer Fran Williams deliver a masterclass, which included Year 7 and Sixth Form netballers playing together. Across the year groups, our teams are now well formed and settled, ready to push on in next term’s very busy schedule of matches. It is exciting to see so much talent on display.

Miss Alison May, Ski Team Manager

Congratulations to the students selected to represent Woldingham at the British Schoolgirls’ Ski Race Championships Flaine, France from 27-31 January, following trials at the Chatham Snowsports Centre at the end of November.

Good luck to Year 11s Alice M and Grace C, Sophie V-E and Oksana v R in Lower Sixth, Upper Sixth Former Issy K and Megan v R in Year 10 (L to R in photo in gallery below).  All six team members have competed at the championships before and can’t wait to take part again in 2024.

Water polo – Mrs Caroline Treacy, Director of Sport

And finally for 2023, some great news from the pool. With the U14 London Sharks Girls Water Polo Team, Year 8 sport scholar Tarryn L won silver at the Inter Regionals Competition, held in Walsall on the first weekend of December. Congratulations on this fantastic achievement, Tarryn.
