Plenty of success for Year 8 hockey and netballers on Ascot tour

8 February 2024

It has been another busy few weeks for sport with students competing in local, county and regional competitions and a packed weekend of hockey and netball for our Year 8 teams on tour to Ascot (main photo).

Year 8 hockey and netball tour - Daisy O and Amaya S

What an amazing weekend of sport we had in Ascot! Our tour began on Friday 2 February with three hockey matches – and three wins - against Leighton Park: Woldingham A - 8:0; Woldingham B - 17:0; and Woldingham C - 5:3. Well done to all our amazing goal scorers and our players of match – Kayleigh (A), Freya (B), and Emelia (C). To celebrate, we went for a delicious pizza in the evening.

We woke up early on Saturday with an exciting day ahead of us. In the morning, our netball teams took on St George’s, with wins for the A and B teams (14:5 and 7:2) and a tight match for the C team, which St George’s took 9:6. Our players of the match were Emelia and Delphie (A), Evie (B), and Caitlin and Clara (C).

We had time for a spot of shopping before heading to St Mary’s for our final tour matches. Miss Hindley’s half time team talk to the netball A team, telling us we were playing our best netball ever, spurred us on to a 23:17 win (with Thea player of the match). The netball B team won 11:7 (players of the match were Zeta and Caitin) and our C team was beaten 8:3 (Isla was player of the match).

On the hockey pitches, our teams took two draws and a win. Woldingham A’s match had an exciting finish, with a pass across the D by Daisy and a deflection from Oli scoring a late goal to take the final score to 1:1 (Daisy was player of the match). There was also a 1:1 draw for Woldingham B (player of the match was Delphie) and a 2:0 win for Woldingham C (with Emilia player of the match).

Though our matches were over, competition continued in the evening with Poppy beating everyone (students and teachers) at bowling before we celebrated Isla’s birthday with burgers and milkshakes.

A huge thank you to Miss Hindley, Mr Rebbetts and Miss Daley for taking us on this amazing trip and for all their support from the sidelines. All our teams showcased plenty of determination and teamwork.

Netball – Mrs Caroline Treacy, Director of Sport

Our 1st VII has had a great run of fixtures with victories over Reed’s and Trinity and a narrow loss (by just two goals) to KCS Wimbledon. Our 3rd and 4th Senior netball teams have enjoyed a wealth of fixtures too in recent weeks, both mid-week and at weekends.

Swimming - Mrs Tina Cornelius, Head of Swimming

We took five members of the swimming team to the recent ESSA Individual Swimming Championships in Guildford (see photo in gallery). Zoe, Year 8, took a silver medal from an exciting 100m breaststroke race that was neck and neck the whole way. Odette, Year 8, came second in the 100m front crawl, gaining a personal best time. Emily, Year 7, took part in her first ever 100m backstroke race. Alice, Year 10, also swam 100m breaststroke, coming third in her heat. Isabelle, Year 8, took part in the toughest event of the evening, the 200m individual medley. Well done to all our swimmers.

Congratulations to Lara, Year 10, who took second place in the 50m and 100m backstroke at the Surrey Championships last month, as well as coming fourth in the 200 free and seventh in the 50 free.

Cricket – Mr Daryll Rebbetts, Head of Cricket

Our U13 and U15 indoor cricket teams (see photos below) progressed from their district cricket groups to qualify for the regional Surrey stage against Dunottar, Sutton and Nonsuch schools. Both teams played well, each beating Sutton but narrowly losing to Dunottar and Nonsuch to finish third in their respective groups.

As well as preparing for the summer season with early morning and lunchtime net sessions, in February our cricketers have been given the exciting opportunity to play indoor cricket at Lord’s – “The home of cricket” - which we’re all really looking forward to.

Year 7 indoor athletics - Mr Ben Allberry, Head of Hockey

Eight Year 7 students (Ava S, Amelia R, Amelia C, Emily S, Bella C, Lila Beau H, Sarah A and Eugenia C M) travelled the short distance to de Stafford School for a sports hall athletics meet, where they took part in modified athletic events for the indoor environment, ranging from relay races to standing triple jump. The girls had a wonderful time, running, throwing and jumping their hearts out to finish in a respectable joint sixth place.

Cross Country – Mrs Caroline Treacy, Director of Sport

Daisy L, Year 8, took part in the SE Inter counties Surrey schools XC at Haywards Heath last weekend. It was a tough field, with Daisy competing against runners in the year above her. Despite this, she ran a superb race to finish as the 9th Surrey runner, helping the Surrey team to win overall. See photo in gallery below.
